The Villa's History
Villa Widmann-Borletti was built in 1656 by Ludovico Widmann, who commissioned the architect Baldassarre Longhena. The Villa is located near Padua and is built on a Benedictine monastery dating from the year 1000. This luxurious abode soon became a holiday dwelling for the nobility and artists. Among the most eminent guests was Carlo Goldoni, who wrote a number of his plays while staying in the Villa and staged them in its theater, sometimes performing as an actor himself. The beautiful historical gardens are enriched by 160 sculptures: in addition to Greek divinities and the signs of the zodiac, the most distinguished statues are those by Antonio Bonazza that portray the characters of the Commedia dell'arte (1742). At night, a sons et lumière (sound and light) show brings the statues back to life. At Villa Widmann-Borletti, guests can also visit the ancient wine cellars and stay at the agritourism, which offers accommodation in the Villa's ancient stable that was converted into evocative apartments surrounded by the quiet of the brolo (orchard).
